MonaLisa Touch Q & A

by Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su, MD, MSCE

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is an innovative vaginal rejuvenation treatment that uses fractional CO2 laser technology to revitalize tissues in the vaginal canal. It’s a safe, noninvasive way to treat vaginal atrophy and prevent its aftereffects without having to resort to messy lubricants, hormone replacement therapy, or surgery.

In just a few quick treatments, MonaLisa Touch can help restore:

  • Trophic balance to tissues
  • Normal vaginal functional
  • Pain-free sexual intimacy

During the procedure, Dr. Dunsmoor-Su uses a vaginal probe to ease the laser into your vagina. As it emits gentle pulses of laser energy into the vaginal wall, it activates the production of new collagen and revitalizes the vaginal mucosa.

How Does MonaLisa Touch Work?

The MonaLisa Touch laser works by making microscopic injuries in vaginal tissues, which triggers your body’s natural healing response. As the rejuvenating cells in the treatment area reawaken, they begin to restore the normal elements of healthy vaginal tissue, including collagen, glycogen, and hyaluronic acid.

These changes cause your vaginal tissues to plump up, thicken, and become more hydrated. The glycogens and hyaluronic acid also restore normal vaginal pH to help encourage the return of healthy bacteria and reduce chronic infection.

Is MonaLisa Touch Right For Me?

MonaLisa Touch laser therapy is primarily intended for menopausal women who are experiencing vaginal dryness or any other urinary symptoms caused by hormone-related changes.

The treatment is just as effective for women who have gone through natural menopause as it is for women whose menopause was induced by a hysterectomy. It’s also one of the only viable options for women who can’t safely receive hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Dr. Dunsmoor-Su uses MonaLisa Touch to address:

  • Vaginal dryness, burning, or itching
  • Painful intercourse or sexual dysfunction
  • Frequent vaginal infections
  • Stress, urge, or mixed urinary incontinence
  • Chronic urinary tract infections

MonaLisa Touch can also be helpful for women who are affected by long-standing vaginal dryness and other hormone-related symptoms following childbirth or while breastfeeding.

What is the MonaLisa Touch Treatment Like?

MonaLisa Touch is an in-office procedure that takes less than five minutes. Although most women see noticeable results following the first treatment, the average woman needs three treatments for complete results.

Each treatment is spaced six weeks apart to give your body’s healing mechanisms enough time to rejuvenate the vaginal tissues. A typical initial treatment course of three treatments takes twelve weeks to complete. Yearly maintenance is recommended which entails once yearly single treatments.

What Can I Expect Following Treatment?

Most of Dr. Dunsmoor-Su’s patients report significant symptom relief after the first treatment and further relief with each successive treatment.

As a noninvasive therapy, MonaLisa Touch is painless and doesn’t require any recovery time, meaning you can resume most normal activities immediately.

It is recommended, however, that you refrain from having sexual intercourse for two or three days to allow your vaginal tissues enough time to heal. A little irritation and soreness in the treated areas is normal, but typically resolves in a day or two.

Treated women need annual follow-up single session treatments to maintain their results; Dr. Dunsmoor-Su will let you know if annual treatments are right for you.
